I often think that the night is more alive and more richly colored than the day.

— Vincent van Gogh

REFLECTION

WHAT THIS MEANS

Daylight is crowded with tasks, and crowded hours flatten everything into use. When the noise drops, the same world comes back with more detail in it: sounds you missed, colors you had no time for, thoughts that could not get a word in. Emptiness and stillness are not the same thing. What seems like less going on is often just less demanding your attention.

Give yourself one stretch of the day with nothing scheduled in it and nothing to finish. Stay awake to it rather than filling it, and notice what turns up when nothing is being asked of you.

A QUESTION TO SIT WITH

Which hours of your day are secretly your most alive?
