Faith keeps many doubts in her pay. If I could not doubt, I should not believe.

— Henry David Thoreau

GRATITUDE

WHAT THIS MEANS

Doubt is not the enemy of conviction; it is the condition that makes conviction mean anything. If nothing in you could question it, holding it would cost nothing and prove nothing. The doubts stay on the payroll because they keep the belief honest, testing it, asking it to earn its place again. Certainty would end the work, and also the value of it.

When a doubt arrives, try treating it as employed rather than hostile. Write down what it is actually asking, and answer that question rather than suppressing it. What survives that will hold better than what was never questioned.

A QUESTION TO SIT WITH

Which of your doubts has actually strengthened what you believe?
