God is an unutterable sigh, planted in the depths of the soul.

— Jean Paul

GRATITUDE

WHAT THIS MEANS

Some of what is deepest in you has never found words and never will. It shows up as a pull toward something you cannot name, a sudden ache at music or at a stretch of light, a sense that there is more going on than the day accounts for. Trying to argue it into a position usually kills it. It is nearer to breath than to belief.

You do not have to resolve that feeling into an answer. Give it a few unhurried minutes this week without a phone or an explanation, and let it stay unfinished. What is wordless in you is not a problem to be solved.
