Humanity is never so beautiful as when praying for forgiveness, or else forgiving another.

— Jean Paul

GRATITUDE

WHAT THIS MEANS

Two moments show people at their best, and both involve setting down a claim. Asking to be forgiven means giving up the version of the story where you were right. Granting it means giving up the debt you are owed. Neither is weakness. Both take more of a person than holding the line ever does.

Think of one place where you are still keeping score. You do not have to resolve it in a conversation this week. Start by deciding privately whether you would rather be owed or be free, and let that choice shape what you say next time it comes up.

A QUESTION TO SIT WITH

Whose apology are you holding rather than accepting?
