I have held many things in my hands, and I have lost them all; but whatever I have placed in God’s hands, that I still possess.

— Martin Luther

GRATITUDE

WHAT THIS MEANS

Everything you grip tightly eventually leaves your hands. What you hand over freely, to someone else or to something larger than your own keeping, has a strange way of staying with you. Not because possession works differently, but because giving turns a thing into something that no longer depends on your holding it.

Think of one thing you are clutching: a plan, a grievance, a person’s good opinion. Loosen your hold on it by a little this week and see what remains. You may find the part worth keeping was never the part your hands were closed around.

A QUESTION TO SIT WITH

What are you gripping that you would be safer releasing?
