I never knew how to worship until I knew how to love.

— Henry Ward Beecher

GRATITUDE

WHAT THIS MEANS

Reverence is not learned in the abstract. Until you have given yourself over to one particular person or thing, devotion is only a word you can pronounce correctly. Loving something small and specific teaches you what it is to attend to something outside yourself and to want its good more than your own comfort. Whatever larger thing you turn toward later, you turn toward with hands that have already practised.

Pick the nearest thing you actually care for and give it your attention this week without hurrying it. The steadiness you find there is the same steadiness anything larger would ask of you.
