Fear is the mother of morality.

— Friedrich Nietzsche

LEADERSHIP

WHAT THIS MEANS

Much of what passes for good behavior begins as fear of what happens otherwise: being caught, being shamed, being cast out. That origin does not make the behavior worthless, but it does explain why some rules collapse the moment nobody is watching. Conduct held up by dread needs a constant audience. Conduct held up by care does not.

Pick one rule you keep and ask what would happen if no one found out. If the honest answer is that you would drop it, either let it go or find a reason to keep it that belongs to you. That second version tends to survive the weeks when you are tired.

A QUESTION TO SIT WITH

Which rule do you follow out of fear rather than belief?
