For anything worth having one must pay the price; and the price is always work, patience, love, self-sacrifice - no paper currency, no promises to pay, but the gold of real service.

— John Burroughs

RESILIENCE

WHAT THIS MEANS

Anything worth having is bought with something real, and the currency is always the same: time you actually spent, patience you actually kept, care you actually gave. Promises do not count, and neither does intending to start. The price is not a punishment; it is simply what the thing costs.

Name one thing you say you want and work out what this week’s installment would be. An hour, a difficult conversation, a practice session you would rather skip. Pay that, and then pay it again next week. The question is never whether you deserve the thing, only whether you are willing to keep paying for it.

A QUESTION TO SIT WITH

What are you hoping to get without paying for it?
