God cannot alter the past, though historians can.

— Samuel Butler

REFLECTION

WHAT THIS MEANS

The past itself is finished and beyond reach. What stays movable is the account of it, and accounts get rewritten by whoever holds the pen. Someone’s motive can be recast, a detail can be quietly dropped, and the story that survives may not be the one that happened. That is why the retelling deserves more care than the event ever got.

Notice where you are the historian this week. When you describe something that went wrong, check whether you are reporting it or improving it. If a version of your own past has hardened into something too flattering or too cruel, set it beside what you actually remember.

Has your version of an old event shifted over time?
