If there is something to pardon in everything, there is also something to condemn.

— Friedrich Nietzsche

REFLECTION

WHAT THIS MEANS

Every action can be explained, and the same action can still be wrong. Understanding why someone did a thing does not dissolve what the thing cost, and naming the cost does not oblige you to treat the person as a monster. Holding both at once is harder than picking a side, which is why most people pick one. A blanket pardon and a blanket verdict are the same shortcut in different clothes.

Take one grievance you are carrying and set down both halves plainly: what you can understand, and what remains unacceptable. Decide what you want next with both of them in view.

A QUESTION TO SIT WITH

Whose behaviour do you excuse and condemn depending on your mood?
