I dream of painting and then I paint my dream.

— Vincent van Gogh

CREATIVITY

WHAT THIS MEANS

Making anything happens twice. First it exists as an image you carry around, vague at the edges and clear at the centre, and then your hands go looking for it in the material. The dreaming is not idle time before the work, it is the first half of the work.

Give the picture room before you start. Sit with what you want to make until you can see some part of it plainly, then begin with that part rather than with the corner that is easiest. What you cannot yet picture will come while your hands are busy.

A QUESTION TO SIT WITH

Which image in your head has never made it out?
