In this world it is not what we take up, but what we give up, that makes us rich.

— Henry Ward Beecher

GRATITUDE

WHAT THIS MEANS

Wealth of this kind is not about the size of the pile. What you decline shapes a life at least as much as what you gather: the commitments you refuse, the arguments you drop, the things you could own and choose not to. Every yes takes up room, and room is the scarce thing. A life crowded with possessions has less space than an emptier one.

Look for one thing you are holding that costs more attention than it returns: a subscription, a side project, a grudge. Let it go this week and notice what fills the gap. Adding is easy to measure; subtracting is where the change shows.

A QUESTION TO SIT WITH

What would you feel lighter for giving up this year?
