It takes two to speak the truth: one to speak, and another to hear.

— Henry David Thoreau

GRATITUDE

WHAT THIS MEANS

Honesty is not finished when the words leave your mouth. It needs someone on the other side willing to take it in without flinching, arguing, or filing it away as an attack. Where that willingness is missing, people learn to say a smaller and safer version of what is true, and then everyone wonders why the conversation felt thin. Half of what you get told depends on how you receive it.

Think of one person who has stopped telling you things. The next time they start to, listen all the way to the end before you answer, and thank them for the part that was hard to say.

A QUESTION TO SIT WITH

Who actually hears you when you say something difficult?
