One of the disadvantages of wine is that it makes a man mistake words for thoughts.

— Samuel Johnson

GRATITUDE

WHAT THIS MEANS

Fluency and thinking are not the same thing, and certain states make them feel identical. When the words come easily the sentence sounds finished, and the ease gets mistaken for accuracy. You hear yourself being articulate and stop checking whether any of it is true. The feeling of having a point is not the same as having one.

Try saying the idea again the next morning, plainly, to someone who was not there. What survives that was a thought. What falls apart was a pleasing arrangement of words, and letting it go costs you nothing.
