My trade and art is to live.

— Michel de Montaigne

REFLECTION

WHAT THIS MEANS

Living well is often treated as what happens around the real work, once the job is done and the obligations are cleared. Turning it the other way makes the day itself the craft: how you pay attention, how you treat people, how you spend an ordinary afternoon. Skill in that is learned the way any skill is, by practice and by caring how it turns out.

Take one part of the day you usually rush through and do it as though it were the work. Eating, walking somewhere, the first hour after you wake. Nothing about it has to be productive to be done well.

A QUESTION TO SIT WITH

Would you call living itself something you practise?
