Nature and books belong to the eyes that see them.

— Ralph Waldo Emerson

REFLECTION

WHAT THIS MEANS

A book gives back what the reader brings to it, and a field gives back what the walker notices. The words on the page are fixed, but the meaning is not, and it depends on what you have lived and how closely you are looking. Two people can walk the same path and come home with different days.

When something leaves you cold, consider that the shortfall may be in your attention rather than in the thing. Go back to one book or one walk you found dull, and give it twenty slow minutes with nothing else running. Notice what shows up the second time.
