Our truest life is when we are in dreams awake.

— Henry David Thoreau

CREATIVITY

WHAT THIS MEANS

There are hours when you are entirely present and entirely elsewhere at once: absorbed in work, in a conversation, in something you are making, with your ordinary calculations switched off. Those hours tend to feel more like you than the careful, managed ones do. What you want and what you are actually doing stop pulling in different directions. That is a fair test of a life, though it is not one you can force.

Notice when it last happened and what the conditions were. Then protect a little of that each week, before the hours get spent on things that never once made you lose track of the time.

A QUESTION TO SIT WITH

When do you feel most awake in an ordinary week?
