Peace is rarely denied to the peaceful.

— Friedrich Schiller

STILLNESS

WHAT THIS MEANS

A good share of the trouble in an ordinary life is trouble we help make: the reply that had to be sent, the slight that had to be answered, the argument kept warm long after it mattered. Take those away and much of the noise goes with them. Not all of it. Some conflict arrives uninvited and no amount of calm on your side would have stopped it, which is worth saying plainly.

Still, over the next week, watch the moments when you are deciding whether to escalate. Let one of them pass unanswered and see what it costs you. Usually it is less than you expect.
