The more liberty you give away the more you will have.

— Robert Green Ingersoll

STILLNESS

WHAT THIS MEANS

Freedom is not a fixed quantity that shrinks when someone else gets some. Every bit of control you hold over another person has to be maintained by you, watched by you, defended by you, and that maintenance is its own cage. Let someone make their own choices and you are released from managing the outcome. What looks like giving something up is mostly putting something down.

Find one place where you are quietly supervising an adult who did not ask for it, at work or at home. Hand the decision back, say plainly that it is theirs, and notice how much attention returns to you.

A QUESTION TO SIT WITH

Whose choices do you control more tightly than you need to?
