There is one consolation in being sick; and that is the possibility that you may recover to a better state than you were ever in before.

— Henry David Thoreau

RESILIENCE

WHAT THIS MEANS

Being unwell strips the week down to what you can actually manage, and that narrowing sometimes shows you what was never worth carrying. Nothing about the illness is deserved or useful in itself. But bodies and lives do sometimes come back rearranged, with habits broken that you could not have broken on purpose. That possibility is not a reason to be grateful for the pain; it is only a door that is sometimes open.

If you are ill now, the task is rest and nothing more. Later, when you have more room, notice which of the old routines you are in no hurry to pick back up.
