Those who deny freedom to others deserve it not for themselves; and under the rule of a just God, cannot long retain it.

— Abraham Lincoln

LEADERSHIP

WHAT THIS MEANS

Holding another person down takes constant effort, and the effort binds you as surely as it binds them. Someone who will not grant freedom has already argued that freedom is a privilege rather than a right, and that argument can be turned on them the moment power shifts. Arrangements built on keeping others small tend not to last, because they require everyone inside them to keep agreeing to something no one would choose.

Look for the smaller version in your own dealings: a choice you are quietly withholding from someone. Consider what it would cost you to hand it back.
