Truth is ever to be found in simplicity, and not in the multiplicity and confusion of things.

— Isaac Newton

REFLECTION

WHAT THIS MEANS

What turns out to be true is usually small. Complication tends to be a sign that something is still unresolved: extra conditions, extra exceptions, extra words doing the work that clarity should be doing. When you finally understand a thing, the explanation gets shorter. Confusion multiplies, and understanding reduces.

Take one thing you have been explaining at length lately and try to say it in a single sentence. If you cannot, the muddle is in your grasp of it rather than in the listener. Keep cutting until what remains is the part you would still defend with everything else taken away.
