Truth is so obscure in these times, and falsehood so established, that, unless we love the truth, we cannot know it.

— Blaise Pascal

REFLECTION

WHAT THIS MEANS

Wanting what is true is part of how you find it. When there is a great deal of noise and confident error around, being capable of recognising something accurate is not enough; you have to care enough to keep looking after the easy answer has arrived. Indifference settles for whatever is loudest. Affection for what is real makes you slow down where slowing down matters.

Pick a question you stopped examining because the common answer was convenient. Give it an hour. Notice whether you want it to come out a particular way, and hold your conclusion more loosely if you do.

A QUESTION TO SIT WITH

Do you want the truth more than you want to be right?
