We should consider every day lost on which we have not danced at least once. And we should call every truth false which was not accompanied by at least one laugh.

— Friedrich Nietzsche

GRATITUDE

WHAT THIS MEANS

A day without some moment of physical gladness has slipped past without being lived in, and a truth held without any lightness has probably hardened into something else. Seriousness is not the same as depth. Laughter works as a test: what is really true tends to survive being enjoyed, while what is merely solemn needs protecting from it.

Find one small way to move today for no purpose beyond the moving. Then notice which of your firm convictions you cannot bear to smile about, and treat that discomfort as information rather than proof you are right.
