When I do good I feel good, when I do bad I feel bad, and that’s my religion.

— Abraham Lincoln

LEADERSHIP

WHAT THIS MEANS

Conscience is a simpler instrument than most systems of belief, and harder to argue with. You know the feeling: a small lift after doing right by someone, a dull weight after cutting a corner. Those signals are quick and they are usually accurate about the thing you just did. Treating them as information rather than noise is most of what ethics asks.

This week, when that dull feeling shows up, stop and name the act that caused it instead of moving on. Then fix the small version of it while it is still small. The lift is information too, and worth following.
