When I have a terrible need of - shall I say the word - religion. Then I go out and paint the stars.

— Vincent van Gogh

CREATIVITY

WHAT THIS MEANS

The need arrives before any name for it does. Something in you wants contact with what is larger than your own week, and the words available for that need can feel embarrassing to say out loud. One honest answer is to go and make something in front of the thing that is larger. The awe gets used rather than explained.

When that restlessness comes, try going outside or picking up the work instead of reaching for a phrase. Paint, walk, write, cook, play something badly. What you need may not be an answer, but an hour of attention given to something vast.

A QUESTION TO SIT WITH

Where do you go when words will not do the job?
