Wise sayings often fall on barren ground, but a kind word is never thrown away.

GRATITUDE

WHAT THIS MEANS

Advice needs the right soil. Someone has to be ready to hear it, and most of the time they are not, so the cleverest counsel slides off and leaves nothing behind. Warmth asks nothing of the person receiving it. It does not require agreement or timing or a change of mind, which is why it lands even when nothing else does.

When you want to help someone this week, notice the pull toward explaining what they should do. Try the smaller thing first: say the decent sentence you are holding back. You can offer the advice later, if they ask.

A QUESTION TO SIT WITH

When did someone’s plain kindness reach you better than their advice?
