Wonder is the basis of worship.

— Thomas Carlyle

GRATITUDE

WHAT THIS MEANS

Reverence does not start with belief. It starts with being stopped by something: a sky, a piece of music, the sheer fact that anything exists at all. Whatever you hold sacred was built on top of that first moment of being genuinely struck. When the wonder goes out of it, what remains is habit wearing the same clothes.

Go find something this week that is larger or stranger than you can account for, and stay with it a minute longer than is comfortable. You do not have to name what you feel or fit it into a system. Being stopped is enough to begin with.
