You will find poetry nowhere unless you bring some of it with you.

REFLECTION

WHAT THIS MEANS

What a place gives back depends partly on what you arrive carrying. A street, a room, a long familiar face will stay flat if you look at it only to check whether anything has changed. The quality people call beauty is mostly a quality of attention, and attention is something you bring rather than something you find lying around.

Give one ordinary stretch of your day your full and unhurried notice: the walk to the car, the ten minutes before anyone else is awake. Do not try to feel anything in particular. Just look longer than is useful, and see what the place turns out to have been holding.

A QUESTION TO SIT WITH

What do you bring into a room before it gives anything back?
