Calling someone “annoying” or “weird” is a shortcut that skips getting to know them.

GRATITUDE

WHAT THIS MEANS

A label ends the inquiry. Once somebody is filed under weird, you stop taking in new information about them, and every later thing they do gets sorted into the category you already made. It saves effort, which is the appeal, and it costs you whoever they actually were. Most of these calls get made in the first ten minutes.

Take one person you have already summarized and ask them a real question this week. Not to prove anything to yourself. Just to see whether the file you built holds up once you add anything to it.

A QUESTION TO SIT WITH

Who did you label before you learned anything about them?
