The right words at the right time can change the direction of somebody’s whole week.

Timing multiplies what a sentence can do. The same handful of words means almost nothing on an ordinary day and everything on the day somebody is barely holding it together, which is a day you usually cannot detect from outside. That unpredictability is exactly why saying the thing is worth it. You will rarely know which one landed.

Notice when somebody seems slightly off and say something plain to them. Not advice, not a fix. Naming that you noticed is often the entire thing, and it costs nothing to be wrong about it.
