The first time you hold a mic your voice sounds weird to you. Everyone else just hears someone brave.

GRATITUDE

WHAT THIS MEANS

You hear your own voice through your skull as well as your ears, so the amplified version sounds wrong to you and completely normal to everybody else. What feels like exposure from the inside reads from outside as somebody willing to stand up, and that is what the room is actually registering. The gap between those two experiences is enormous.

Do it before you are ready and accept that the first minute will feel strange. It stops sounding wrong after a few goes. Nobody in the audience was hearing the thing you were worried about.

A QUESTION TO SIT WITH

If someone handed you a microphone tomorrow, would you speak?
