Caring openly is risky in a culture that acts bored. Be the one who’s obviously into it.

Detachment is the cheap defence. If you never admit you want something, nobody can watch you not get it, and being unimpressed by everything guarantees you never look foolish. The trade is that it flattens everything, including the parts you actually love, and the people around you learn to hide theirs too.

Be obviously into one thing in public this week. Show up in the shirt, know the details, be the person who is excited about it. Enthusiasm reads as slightly embarrassing for about a minute and then as the most interesting thing in the room.
