At eighty, you won’t list the times you looked silly. You’ll list the times you didn’t show up.

RESILIENCE

WHAT THIS MEANS

Regret is made mostly of absences. The moments you looked foolish get filed away quickly, because nobody replays them as often as you assume, while the rooms you never walked into stay oddly vivid for years. Fear argues as if embarrassment lasts forever and missing out is free, and it has that exactly backwards.

When something small and scary comes up this week, ask which version you would still be thinking about next spring. Usually it is the one where you stayed home. Let that break the tie for you.
