Telling people you’re quitting a habit is scary because now they can hold you to it. That’s the point.
RESILIENCE
RESILIENCE
Announcing that you are quitting something gives other people a way to notice when you do not. That is uncomfortable, and it is also the mechanism: a private intention can be renegotiated at two in the morning, while a public one is harder to edit. You are not asking for applause, you are closing an escape hatch.
Tell two people who will actually remember, and tell them the plan rather than the goal. Ask them to bring it up on Sunday. If you slip, say so out loud, because hiding it is usually where the real slide begins.
Who could you tell about the habit you are quitting?
Free, with nothing to buy inside it.
