A haiku gets seventeen syllables, and people have been breaking hearts with it for centuries. Short isn’t small.

CREATIVITY

WHAT THIS MEANS

Size and weight have nothing to do with each other. A very short form works because the constraint forces every word to carry something, and the space left over does the rest, since the reader fills it with their own life. Length is often a way of hedging. Short leaves nowhere to hide, which is why it lands so hard when it works.

Try saying something in under twenty words that you would usually give a page. Cut every word that is only there for rhythm. Notice how much heavier the remainder gets.
