Hold your dreams with open hands. God might swap them for better ones.

A dream held tightly stops being something you are hoping for and starts being something you are defending. Open hands do not mean caring less, they mean staying willing to be redirected while you still want it. Sometimes what comes back is not the thing you asked for, and later it turns out to have been the better trade.

Keep working towards the thing, and keep the grip loose enough that a change of direction would not break you. Tell God what you want plainly, then add that you are open. Ask what would still be good about your life if this particular version never happened.
