A loving rebuke from a friend is worth more than a hundred likes from strangers.
GRATITUDE
GRATITUDE
Praise from people who do not know you costs them nothing and tells you nothing. A friend saying the hard true thing costs them the comfort of the friendship, and they say it anyway, which is why it outweighs a crowd of approval. It rarely feels like a gift at the time. Usually it feels like being attacked by the wrong person.
When someone close tells you what you did not want to hear, wait a day before deciding they are wrong. Ask one follow-up question instead of defending. Then be that person for somebody else, carefully, in private, and only where you have earned the right.
Which friend tells you the truth you’d rather not hear?
