Refs, volunteers, snack-bar parents: the game doesn’t happen without people nobody cheers for.

GRATITUDE

WHAT THIS MEANS

Every event you enjoy has a layer of unpaid people underneath it. Somebody lined the field, somebody sold the drinks, somebody agreed to be shouted at for ninety minutes by strangers. None of them are there for attention, and the thing simply does not happen without them. They mostly hear from people only when something goes wrong.

Thank one of them directly this season, by name if you know it. Volunteer once for the job nobody wants. Doing that even a single time permanently changes how you talk about the person holding the whistle.

A QUESTION TO SIT WITH

Who runs the events you attend without ever being thanked?
