Starting late means doing the beginner stage in front of people who have watched you be competent at other things. That is the real barrier, not the skill gap, and it is why most people stay with whatever they are already good at. Being visibly bad takes more nerve than being quietly capable, and it is the only entry fee any new thing charges.
Go to the first session of the thing you keep thinking about, and go badly. Say out loud that you are new. Most rooms treat beginners better than the version in your head predicts.
What would you try if nobody saw your first attempts?
