Advice from the people who raised you is honest and also dated, because it was built from a world that has shifted underneath it. Jobs, prices, how people meet, what a career even looks like: most of that terrain changed after their map was printed. It does not make them wrong about the big things, like how to treat people and how to work.

Take the principles and question the specifics. Ask what they were actually solving for, then work out the current version. Tell them what the ground looks like now, since nobody handed them a new map either.
