Mentors show you the path through the woods. They don’t carry you through it.

Good guidance saves you from wasting years on avoidable mistakes, and that is all it does. The walking is still yours, including the parts that are boring and the parts that hurt. People sometimes go looking for a mentor when what they actually want is someone to take the weight. That version does not exist, and it would not help if it did.

Come to the person with a specific question rather than a general request for help. Do what they suggest before you go back, so the next conversation has something in it. Report what happened, because that is what makes anyone want to keep advising you.
