If people check with you before they decide, you already have influence. Use it like you’d want it used on you.

LEADERSHIP

WHAT THIS MEANS

Influence rarely arrives with a title attached. It shows up as people running things past you before they commit, which means your opinion is already shaping outcomes you are not formally responsible for. Most people holding that kind of position never notice they have it, and a few notice and start enjoying the pull. Both of those go wrong in different directions.

Answer honestly even when the honest answer is unwelcome. Say when you do not know. Ask yourself how you would want somebody with that much say over your decisions to use it.
