Being boringly dependable is underrated. Nobody ever called the flashy friend at 2 a.m. when the car broke down.

LEADERSHIP

WHAT THIS MEANS

Flash is entertaining and dependability is what gets called. Those are different currencies, and most people chase the first without noticing that the second is what makes anyone rely on you. Being reliable is unglamorous by design: it is doing the ordinary thing every time, including the times nobody would know. The payoff arrives late and in private, usually on someone’s worst night.

Look at the small promises you made this week, the ones with no consequences attached. Keep all of them, including the one you could quietly drop. That is the entire practice, and it builds so slowly you will not see it until somebody calls you first.

A QUESTION TO SIT WITH

Who would you call at 2 a.m., and who calls you?
