Ask a question and people build the answer with you. Give an order and they just wait for the next one.

LEADERSHIP

WHAT THIS MEANS

An order transfers a task. A question transfers the thinking, and whoever does the thinking is the one who ends up caring how it turns out. That is the whole difference in how invested people get, and it is why order-driven groups go idle between instructions. You are slower at the start and much less needed later.

Swap one instruction for a question this week: instead of saying how to handle it, ask how they would. Sit through the silence afterwards, because the silence is where the answer gets built. If their version is eighty percent as good, use theirs.

A QUESTION TO SIT WITH

When did you last ask rather than tell someone?
