Protect the new person from the jokes that “everyone goes through.” That tradition is just laziness with seniority.

LEADERSHIP

WHAT THIS MEANS

Traditions that involve making a newcomer uncomfortable usually survive because the people running them already paid the toll and want the ledger balanced. It gets defended as bonding. What it actually teaches the new person is that this is a place where you get put through something, which is a poor first lesson and a hard one to unlearn.

If it starts near you, be the one who says that is enough, without turning it into a scene. Then go talk to the new person normally. Ending a tradition mostly requires one person declining to pass it on.
