Try something you’re guaranteed to be bad at. It’s the fastest way to remember how learning feels.

CREATIVITY

WHAT THIS MEANS

Getting competent means spending most of your time in the range where you already know what you are doing, and the beginner feeling fades out of memory. That feeling is not weakness, it is what the first week of anything is like. Forgetting it makes you quieter about trying and harsher on people who are new. Going back refreshes both.

Pick something you have no aptitude for and do it badly on purpose this month. A language, a sport, an instrument, anything with an obvious floor. Pay attention to how long the clumsy stretch actually lasts, because it is usually shorter than you remember.

A QUESTION TO SIT WITH

What could you try this weekend knowing you will be terrible?
