A headline is a trailer. Don’t walk out of the theater acting like you saw the movie.

CREATIVITY

WHAT THIS MEANS

Headlines are written to make you click, not to inform you, and they are usually written by someone other than the person who did the reporting. What you get from one is a mood and a direction. Walking around with that as your position means arguing on behalf of a sentence engineered for attention, and being confident about details you have never actually seen.

Set a small rule for yourself: no opinions out loud on anything you have only read the headline of. Either open it and read the thing, or say you have not read it yet. Both of those are respectable.

A QUESTION TO SIT WITH

Do you have opinions built entirely out of headlines?
