Reading about a city is a map. Walking it is knowing. Both help, but only one gets you home in the dark.

CREATIVITY

WHAT THIS MEANS

Descriptions give you structure, and structure is genuinely useful. It is just a different kind of knowledge from the sort your feet build. Walking a place puts in the hill you did not expect, the smell near the bakery, how long the block really takes. That layer cannot be read in, and it is the layer you draw on when something goes wrong and there is no time to look anything up.

Wherever you are learning something from a page, find the smallest way to walk it this week. Visit, try, make, go. Keep the map, then go get the other half.

A QUESTION TO SIT WITH

Have you ever walked a place you only read about?
