When someone asks you something weird, get curious about the question behind it.

Odd questions usually come from somewhere. People ask about the strangest details when they are working on a problem you cannot see, testing whether you are safe to talk to, or halfway into a subject they love. Answering the surface question and moving on closes all of that. Asking what is behind it opens a conversation you would never have found on purpose.
Next time something out of nowhere lands on you, try a plain follow-up. What made you think of that, or where is this coming from, asked warmly rather than defensively. Most people are relieved to be asked.
